Visiting the ATLAS Detector
This morning I was taken on a tour of the ATLAS cavern, here are some photos of the colossus!
- The surface control room.
- Mural painted on the ATLAS surface building.
- Mural from the side.
- The surface entrance eye scanning machine!
- The underground entrance.
- Access is only allowed during extended shutdowns.
- The gold chambers detect muons, the silver bar is the proton beam pipe.
- Visible are the toroid magnets and calorimeter endcap.
- The red area is where the protons enter the detector just before colliding.
- In total around 80 million channels are read out digitally during a collision!
- Me next to the detector giving an idea of how giant it really is.
